Indian summers are brutal on houseplants — scorching afternoons, dry air from air conditioning, and long dry spells between monsoons all take a toll. The good news is that most plants can handle the heat just fine once you adjust a few habits.

Watering: More Often, But Still Check First

Summer heat means faster evaporation, so soil dries out quicker than in cooler months. Don’t switch to a fixed daily schedule — instead, check the top two inches of soil each day and water only when it’s dry. Early morning is the best time to water, since it lets roots absorb moisture before the day’s heat sets in, and reduces the amount lost to evaporation.

Misting leaves in the evening can also help plants that struggle with dry air, especially if you run your AC often — most air conditioners strip moisture from the room, which stresses tropical plants that are used to humidity.

Light: Move Plants Away From Direct Afternoon Sun

A spot that worked fine in winter can become too intense come April and May. If a plant that was thriving suddenly shows scorched or bleached patches on its leaves, it’s likely getting direct afternoon sun it can’t handle. Sheer curtains or moving the plant a few feet back from the window are simple fixes that don’t require giving up natural light entirely.

Repotting: Pause During Peak Heat

While spring is usually ideal for repotting, the hottest stretch of Indian summer (roughly April through June) is actually the wrong time — the stress of new soil combined with extreme heat can shock even healthy plants. If a plant urgently needs a bigger pot, wait if you can until temperatures ease, or do it in the cooler hours of early morning.
