A once-thriving plant covered in tiny bugs overnight is one of the most common (and most frustrating) plant problems. The good news is that most houseplant pests are easy to control once you catch them early — you rarely need harsh chemicals.
Spot Them Early
Check the undersides of leaves and where leaves meet the stem at least once a week — this is where pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids hide first. Sticky residue on leaves, tiny webbing, or small cotton-like clusters are all early warning signs. Catching an infestation in its first few days makes it far easier to control before it spreads to nearby plants.
Neem Oil: The Simplest First Line of Defense
A diluted neem oil spray, applied every 7–10 days, handles most common houseplant pests without harming the plant. Spray in the evening rather than direct sunlight, and make sure to coat the undersides of leaves, not just the top — that’s where most pests actually live and breed.
Isolate New Plants Before Introducing Them
Many infestations start with a single new plant brought home from a nursery or gifted by a friend. Keep any new plant separate from your existing collection for about two weeks, checking it closely during that time — this simple habit prevents one infected plant from spreading pests to your entire collection.
Pests are rarely a sign you’re doing something wrong — they’re simply part of owning living plants. A little regular attention goes a long way toward keeping your indoor garden healthy.
